Teaching tools:
Computer and projector
Teaching procedures:
I. warm up and arouse the students’ interest
1. Play some popular songs for the students to arouse the students’ interest.
2. Have a free talk with the students by asking:
a. Do you love the music played in the tape?
b. Do you often listen to music?
c. What kinds of music do you enjoy?(perhaps students will answer: classical; popular; Chinese; western… )
d. As you love music so much, are you familiar with these musical instruments?
e. Who plays one of the instruments? Can you tell the class something about your experiences?
3. Ask the students to name the musical instruments above and at the same time deal with the new words like:
audience; choir; classical; composer; conductor; jazz; musician; orchestra; saxophone etc.
II. Function learning
1. After the students give their different opinions, say, “ Have you paid attention to the ways when you express your opinions on music? Do you know more expressions to show your likes and dislikes? Shall we listen to a dialogue and try to find more information about it?
2. Ask the students to listen to the tape and list the ways to show one’s likes and dislikes. (using the supplementary listening)
III. Practice
1. Ask the students to make a short dialogue talking about something about music (e.g. they can choose the musicians they like, the music they enjoy or the musical instruments they are interested in)
2. Give the students some time to practise and then ask pairs of them to act it out.
3. While they are acting, remind the students of the ways to express their likes and dislikes. Tell the students that the most important thing in learning a foreign language is to learn the way they speak not just learn the words and expressions.
In this way, get the students to be familiar with the musicians, different kinds of music and some musical instruments as well.
IV. listening Practice
1. Show the students a picture of the Beatles and say, “ As we know a lot about music, do you know them? How old do you think the photo is? Was it taken recently? How do you know?”
2. While talking about the picture, try to introduce the words to the students and get them to guess the meanings.
3. Play the tape for the students and at the same time give them some T or F exercises to go with.
4. Correct the answers in class and get the students to say something about the Beatles in their own words.
5. If time permitted, get the students to work in groups of four and introduce more musicians or groups to the class.
V. Summary
Give the students a short while to recall what they’ve learned today and then all of the students and teacher together make a summary.
VI. Afterschool work
Show the students a slide with 2 pieces and ask them to choose one according to their taste.
1. Write an email to introduce your favorite musician or instrument to your friend.
