“TO WEB OR NOT TO WEB”
[ 2008-3-12 7:27:00 | By: 孙继华 ]

Teaching procedures:

I. Warm up and arouse the students’ interest.

 1. Say to the students that I'd like to thank your school for offering us teachers two computer rooms for us to prepare our lessons. Yesterday I also went there to search the internet and I got a lot of information from the internet for my lesson today. Look here.( Show Slide 1)

 2. Have a free talk with the students by asking:

1)    Do you often go on line or surf the internet?

2)    Where do you often go on line?

3)    What do you often do there?

4)    What's your opinion about going to the internet cafes/bars?

3. Ask the students to give their opinions on the questions above and at the same time deal with the new words like:

surf the internet, go on line

II: Dialogue presentation and dialogue learning.

1.     After the students give their different opinions, say," Your parents and teachers are very worried about your going on line, so, the other day, your principle held a meeting with some students, parents and teachers and I also attended it. They were talking about whether the students should use the internet or not. Shall we listen to their opinions about it? Now let's listen to a dialogue "To Web Or Not To Web" and after that we'll talk about how to make better use of the internet today. But before listening I'd like to give you two questions." ( Show Slide 2 )

2.     Ask the students to listen with the picture and the two questions given on the screen. (Show slide 3)

3.     After listening, tell the students if they are fully prepared, they may discuss them with their partners. When they are ready, they may put up their hands. Ask the students to answer the questions in pairs, help them to deal with some language points if any.

4.     Ask the students, "Can you tell us their different opinions about going on line?"

5.     If not, ask the students to read the dialogue silently, and try to find more information and at the same time find the things they don't understand. Before reading, show the students some more difficult tasks "Discussion" for them to prepare.

While the students are reading, teacher writes the difficult words on the blackboard.

advantage                go on line

          disadvantage              surf the internet

          responsibility             visit the web

          e-pal

website

6.     Allow the students some time to discuss them in groups of four and then ask the students to act in class and at the same time deal with the language problems written on the blackboard. Help the students to guess from the context.

7.     Ask the students to practise reading the dialogue in groups of 4. While reading, ask the students to pay attention to the ways of expressing opinions, giving suggestions and how to give response.

8.     Ask one or two groups to read in class and then ask other students to comment on their reading.

9.     Ask the students to list how to express their opinions, give suggestions and how to give response from the dialogue. Show the students a slide (Slide 4).

III: Practice

1.     Ask the students to make short dialogues of giving advice to practise the sentence patterns shown on the slide.

2.     Give the students a situation to help them make a similar dialogue in groups of four.

Say:" Now the principle wants to have a second meeting to talk about that problem, let's have a meeting in groups of four, you can decide the parts among yourselves, that is, a principle, a teacher, a parent and a student."

3.     Give the students some time to practise and then ask pairs of them to act it out.

4.     While they are acting , ask the students to pay attention to the language a host uses at a meeting, that is, how to start a meeting, how to end, and how to invite others to make a speech. At the same time, remind the students of the way to refuse others' advice politely. Tell the students that the most important thing in learning a foreign language is to learn the way they speak not just learn the words and expressions.

IV: Dialogue production

Tell the students that after we have learned the ways of expressing opinions, giving suggestions, and giving response. We can use them to make other similar dialogues.

1.     Divide the students into groups of 4.

2.     Show the students a slide with two topics (Slide 5) and ask them to choose either of them.

3.     Give the students some time to practise and then ask them to act it out

V: Summary

Give the students a short while to recall what they've learned today and then all of the students and teacher together make a summary. Then the teacher will say to the students," after we learn the dialogue, what decision have you made about whether to web or not to web? If you agree, please remember what you should do and what you shouldn't do. And be a responsible student!

VI: Afterschool work

Show the students a slide with 3 pieces and ask the students to choose two according to the taste (Show Slide 6).
